Nothing says Lowcountry like outdoor living! We sat down with Skip Briggs, Enhancement Designer and Business Developer at The Greenery, to discuss all things hardscape installation.
You might be thinking: what is a hardscape? “Any hard surface that is not alive or growing,” Skip shared. “This includes brickwork, concrete, columns, pavers and more.” Customers often turn to The Greenery for a combination of both hardscape and landscape projects, like updating an outdoor living space. “A hardscape can encompass anything you can think of that involves the outside: outdoor kitchens, pergolas, benches, wall seats, etc.”
The Greenery provides hardscape services to both residential and commercial clients. One of their most recent projects includes a compass design in a brick driveway. “Our client was a retired Air Force pilot,” Skip said. “His family had a turn-around driveway that needed to be paved in. I brought up that we could do some kind of design with the brickwork and he suggested a compass. We played around with the idea and eventually pulled it off.” The bricks are etched with North, East, South and West direction points and aligned to face true North.
The team also recently completed a patio renovation for a client on Daufuskie Island. “When it comes to residential, many of our clients want to expand on their outdoor living space for entertaining purposes,” said Skip. “We had a high-end client with a really nice house, but no outdoor space to entertain family.” After planning, The Greenery installed an outdoor kitchen with countertops, gas grill, fire pit and patio space made out of travertine.
Commercially, The Greenery has worked with resorts throughout the Lowcountry. Their recent project at the Marriott Barony Bay featured artificial turf by the recreation and pool areas. “The existing corn hole area was set up with sand, which made it pretty messy and not easy to maintain,” Skip said. “We took the sand out and replaced it with artificial turf, which is more durable and easy to work with.” They also installed artificial turf near the swimming pool, creating a low maintenance area that resembles the beach.
Thinking of updating your outdoor space? The Greenery provides a full-service experience from design to installation. “Some of our clients approach us with an idea in mind,” said Skip. “We have a talented team to dedicate to your project. Our in-house designer can develop a concept or idea, create a rough sketch and eventually implement a full scale CAD design.”
